Committed stewardship, thriving ecosystem
The City of Durham has long been a steward for trees and healthy water. Its longstanding efforts to protect and rehabilitate Fanno Creek, a tributary of the Tualatin River that runs through the city’s largest park, has resulted in a cleaner creek and a healthier ecosystem for people and wildlife alike.
Over the last ten years, in collaboration with Friends of Trees, the city has planted more than 18,500 native trees and shrubs along the creek. In Durham, per city ordinance, trees greater than 5 inches in diameter (as measured 4 feet above the ground) require a permit for removal With a forward-thinking bond measure, the city accessioned the open space of Kingsgate Woods to preserve a key natural resource.
